Cookbook – the small but well stocked Echo Park grocery jammed with everything from gourmet cheeses to organic produce – has launched its first series of classes and discussions about food. Owner Marta Teegen earlier this year leased a second storefront in the same Echo Park Avenue building to hold the classes and workshops. These are not cooking classes, however. Instead, the sessions focus on different aspects of food culture, history and even art. The program begins this week on Wednesday, June 15 with a talk by food historian and L.A. Times writer Charles Perry on the “taming of the eggplant in 9th century Baghadad.” This coming weekend, Cookbook will host a class on floral arrangements that include food as well as flowers. July includes a still life drawing class, a talk on the benefits and history of probiotic drinks and a discussion on industrialization and food.
“This is our first round of classes,” Teegen said via email. “We wanted to put together a variety of food-related topics, and through speaking with our customers at the store, we were able to come up with this initial list of summer programs.”

Wednesday, June 15, 7-9pm
CHARLES PERRY, renowned food historian and Los Angeles Times Food Section staff writer, will give a talk on the taming of the eggplant in 9th-century Baghdad (it had been believed to cause freckles, cancer and madness).
Sunday, June 26th, noon-1:30pm
MIKIKO IDENO, who has studied floral design in Japan, will teach a floral arrangement class using flowers, fruits & vegetables. $55 (includes all materials & vase)
Sunday, July 17th, 3-6pm
BELLA FOSTER’s exuberant paintings explode with pattern, light, and bold color. She will build a still life model using a variety of foods and found objects from which to paint or draw. This is an open workshop with instruction provided to anyone who is interested.
Sunday, July 24th, noon-2pm
TRACY HARTWAY has been sharing the health benefits of traditional foods with clients for eight years. She is also an IST practitioner. She will offer a talk on the health benefits and history of probiotic drinks and will share recipe cards to get you started on making your own herbal probiotic drinks.
Wednesday, July 27th, 7-9pm
LINDA CIVITELLO, author of Cuisine and Culture, will give a talk on industrialization and food.
