Lock your car and truck doors, for starters. That was the advice from the Rampart Division officers who have been dealing with a spike in stolen cars, thefts from vehicles and vehicle break-ins this year in the portion of the Silver Lake they patrol south of Sunset Boulevard (Northeast Division patrols north of Sunset). So, far, from Jan. 1 through May 22, 110 vehicle related crimes were reported in the Silver Lake section * of the Rampart Division. That’s up from 78 vehicle related crimes during the same period last year, according to maps and information handed out at a Thursday news conference at the Rampart station. (In contrast, vehicle related crime dipped slightly in the sections of Echo Park, falling to 118 incidents this year from 130 in 2011.) The single largest number of crimes took place between midnight and 6 a.m.
Rampart Capt. Steve Ruiz said the volume of thefts could be reduced if property owners simply made sure to lock their cars doors and keep valuables out of sight. “People want what you got.”
