ECHO PARK — A century-old Echo Park church in the 1600 block of Morton Avenue sustained minor damage after a fire broke out early this morning on the front porch of the structure.
The fire, which was reported at about 2:30 a.m., started on the porch of the Fore Runners for Christ Church and extended to the attic but was quickly extinguished, according to the L.A. Fire Department.
The department’s House of Worship Task Force is investigating the cause of the blaze, which remains unknown. No injuries were reported.
The church was founded in 1914 as the Providence Congregational Church.
Updated: LAFD has determined that the fire was set intentionally but that the motive is not clear; the investigation remains ongoing, said department spokesman Brian Humphrey. He noted that the House of Worship Task Force, which includes federal agencies, is routinely notified in these cases but he did not know if those federal agencies have launched any investigation.
