LOS FELIZ – Much attention has been focused on the new 365 by Whole Foods Market that is scheduled to open Wednesday on Glendale Boulevard in Silver Lake. But that’s not the only big change when it comes to grocery stores that serve Silver Lake and neighboring Los Feliz. Nearby on Hyperion Avenue, the Gelson’s Market is in the middle of a major renovation that will bring a wine and craft beer bar and a Wolfgang Puck Kitchen to the store.
The makeover for the 28,000-square-foot market on the border of Los Feliz and Silver Lake comes 13 years after a previous renovation converted the store from a Mayfair to a Gelson’s. The company would not say whether the current renovation was prompted by the new 365 store, which will occupy a former Ralphs market. But the changes come as more markets add in-store restaurants, prepared foods and high-technology to make shopping easier and faster.
A spokeswoman for Gelson’s, which operates more than 20 stores across Southern California, described some of the changes coming to its store in Los Feliz:
- The bakery will be moved to the left side of the store to make way for a new Wolfgang Puck Kitchen, which will serve freshly prepared salads, pizzas, and sandwiches as well as breakfast.
- The newly created bakery area will feature an enhanced coffee service
- The wine and craft beer bar will also feature a tapas/small plates menu
- New produce bins and a new refrigerated racks are designed to make it easier to shop
The renovation is expected to be completed in July.
