ATWATER VILLAGE — For four years fans of spoken word had gathered in a second floor space above a Silver Lake restaurant to attend events that combined storytelling, music and art. But after losing their lease, the volunteers behind Strong Words needed to find a new home if the stories and good times were to continue. After a few months hiatus, Strong Words is back on in a new indoor-outdoor venue in Atwater Village.
The free Strong Words programs are now being held at the St. Francis Center on Brunswick near Glendale Avenue. The next show is scheduled for Saturday, June 25 at 7:30 pm. The 75-minute program, which is open to the public, is also a social event that revolves around spoken word, music and art.
“In other words, it’s like The Moth but with music and visual art, too,” said Larry Dean Harris of Strong Words.
Past performers at Strong Words have included Broadway veterans Sam Harris and Kevin Chamberlin, television stars like John Ross Bowie (Big Bang Theory) and Tim Bagley (Will & Grace) and recording artists like crooner Todd Murray and singer-songwriter Amy Loftus.
