Residents of the 900 block of Manzanita Street awoke last night to the sound of a loud bang and then went outside to find a Volvo sedan engulfed in flames. It’s not clear what set the vehicle on fire at about 12:30 AM but some residents fear it is part of an increase in crime on their street and surrounding blocks near the Sunset Junction. “Everyone on the street feels this is connected to the recent crimes that have been happening on this street,” said one resident via email. “We really want to get our neighborhood cleaned up.” An officer with the Rampart Division said this morning he had no details about the incident.
The same block was the scene of a “hot-prowl” home burglary last month. Another Manzanita resident, Caren Rubenstone, whose own car was broken into a month ago, stood outside with her neighbors to watch the Volvo burn. She wanted to find out how to improve neighborhood safety. “I love my block, but the violence is starting to scare me.”
