A shooting in Cypress Park early Sunday morning left one man dead, ending a nearly four-month long period when no homicides were reported in the LAPD Northeast Division. The shooting in the 600 block of Romulo Street on Sunday at about 1 AM also left two other males injured, said Capt. William Murphy. “It appears to be gang related,” Murphy said in an email. “Two were struck and unfortunately, one passed away at the hospital.”
Earlier this month The Eastsider reported that the Northeast Division – which is home to about 250,000 residents from Echo Park and Silver Lake to Eagle Rock and Highland Park – had gone without a murder during the first three months of the year. In contrast, the Northeast Division was scene of 5 murders during the first three months of last year year; in 2008 there were 12 murders during the same period.
In response to the Sunday killing in Cypress Park, Murphy said the division has deployed extra gang units in the area to prevent retaliation. Anyone with information about the shooting should call Northeast Division detectives at 213-485-2566.
