It’s been a month since the owners of a Silver Lake mural featuring a smiling bear were granted 30 additional days by city officials to find a way to keep the mural, which inspectors had determined was in violation of sign laws. The new April 1 deadline came and went, and it’s not clear if the issue has been resolved. But the bear and his smiling animal friends, painted by artist Phil Lumbang on a retaining wall, still greet passerby. The couple who commissioned the mural did not reply to emails seeking an update, and a spokeswoman for Councilman Eric Garcetti, who was able to postpone the original deadline to remove the mural, declined to comment.
