The two men were arrested Sunday night following a gang-related shooting that prompted police to close off Highland Park streets as they conducted a lengthy searched for other suspects. Two adults in their late teens were taken into custody and one gun was recovered after their vehicle crashed following a brief police chase, said Dect. Lou Vargas with the Northeast Division gang unit. Police then began a search – which involved a helicopter that hovered overhead for about two hours – for at least one other suspect who might have been in the car, Vargas said.
The incident began at about 8:30 P.M. near Avenue 57 and Fayette Street when two individuals were confronted by the suspects riding inside a vehicle. One of the suspects armed with a gun emerged from the vehicle and fired at one of victim. But the shot missed and no one was injured, Vargas said. The same shooter then pointed the gun and the second man but did not fire his weapon. Police officers who were nearby heard the shots and quickly responded to the scene.
Vargas said the shooting was gang related. He did not identify the gangs by name but said they were two neighborhood rivals.
