Raymond M. Taix, whose Taix French Restaurant in Echo Park is among the oldest family-owned restaurants in Los Angeles, died Sunday night. Taix, who was 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Pasadena, said his son Michael Taix.
Raymond Taix began a six-decade long career in the restaurant business at age 23. By the early 1960s, Raymond Taix was the manager of the family restaurant, which was founded by his father, Marius Taix, Jr., in 1927 on Commercial Street in downtown Los Angeles. When that restaurant and the rest of the block it was located on was bulldozed for new development, Raymond Taix and other family members opened a new location on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park in 1962. Michael Taix, who is now the third generation of his family to operate the restaurant, said his father never considered selling the family business. His father’s favorite meals included short ribs and coq au vin, Michael Taix said.
The family declined to identify the cause of death. Funeral arrangements are pending.
