Allyn E. Morris certainly left his his mark on Silver Lake as well as Echo Park. The architect created the semi-circular, 1973 apartment building now known as the Lago Vista condos that loom to the west above Echo Park Lake. In Silver Lake, he designed some some dramatic cantilevered duplexes and homes. One of those Silver Lake properties, the architect’ s own one-bedroom house at 2390 Silver Ridge Avenue, is now up for sale at an asking price of $668,000. That’s quite a lot for a one-bedroom house. But the property built in 1958 features dramatic mid-century forms and style, including a two-story-living room fronted by a wall of glass, a spiral staircase and mountain views. The home is only about 1,000-square feet but architectural photographer Julius Shulman hailed it as Morris’ best work, according to the real estate listing. More from the listing:
Trained as an engineer and first apprenticed to Lloyd Wright, Morris melded an industrial aesthetic with organic, Wrightian principles. The studio, with its mezzanine master, two-story living room, kitchen, dining area and lower ground-floor office (convertible to a 2nd bedroom) opens like a magical glass lantern affording extraordinary views out to the St. Gabriels and Mt. Baldy. Preserved by the current owner, the residence retains original custom bathroom fixtures, mosaic, brickwork, glass and hardware, with an updated kitchen hewing as closely as possible to the original design, done with advice & supervision by Morris himself.
